GPT-5.6 Is Here: What the Latest ChatGPT Updates Mean for Your Business

If you only read one paragraph: OpenAI released the GPT-5.6 model family on July 9, 2026. It comes in three tiers — Sol (the flagship), Terra (the everyday workhorse), and Luna (the cheap, fast one) — and it powers the version of ChatGPT your office staff is probably already using. For a trades business, the practical wins are better long-running work (think "draft all 12 of my service-area pages" instead of one at a time), a new Ultra mode that runs multiple AI agents in parallel, and meaningfully lower cost per task.

What OpenAI actually launched

After a limited preview that began June 26, 2026 (a small trusted-partner rollout coordinated with the U.S. government), OpenAI made GPT-5.6 generally available on July 9 across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API.

The family has three durable tiers, and the naming is worth learning because OpenAI says it will keep using it:

Two other things shipped alongside the models:

• Ultra mode. OpenAI's highest-capability setting coordinates multiple AI agents across parallel workstreams to finish big jobs faster. Instead of one assistant grinding through a task step by step, Ultra splits the work and runs it concurrently.
• ChatGPT Work. A work-focused product released the same day, with GPT-5.6 as its operating agent — OpenAI's answer to the "AI coworker" category (the same space as Claude Cowork, which we covered in our Claude Cowork guide).

OpenAI also leaned hard on efficiency in the announcement: CEO Sam Altman said Sol is around 54% more token-efficient on coding tasks than previous versions. Translation for non-developers: the same work costs less.

Why this matters more than the last model release

Model launches blur together. Here's the honest answer on why this one is relevant to a contractor:

1. The tools you already pay for get better without you doing anything. Your AI answering platform, your CRM's AI features, your marketing agency's content engine — most of them run on OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google models under the hood. When the base model gets smarter and cheaper, vendors either improve quality or cut costs. Ask your vendors which model powers their product and when they're upgrading. 2. Longer, messier tasks now finish reliably. The headline capability of this model generation — GPT-5.6, Claude Fable 5, Grok 4.5 — is sustained multi-step work. A year ago, asking an AI to "review these 40 Google reviews, group the complaints, and draft response templates for each group" would wander off track halfway. Today that's a routine request.

3. The cheap tier is genuinely cheap. Terra at roughly half the previous flagship's cost and Luna below that means high-volume automations — auto-tagging every inbound lead, summarizing every call transcript — pencil out at prices that used to make owners flinch.

Five things a trades company can do with GPT-5.6 this month

1. Rebuild your review-response workflow. Paste your last 90 days of reviews into ChatGPT and ask for response drafts in your voice, grouped by theme. With Sol's longer attention span, one session handles a quarter's worth.
2. Draft your fall maintenance campaign in one sitting. Emails, postcards, a landing page draft, and follow-up texts — as a single connected brief, not four separate prompts.
3. Turn your price book into customer-facing explainers. "Why does a heat pump install cost $14,000?" pages are exactly the long-form, structured writing this generation is good at. Have a human verify every number before publishing.
4. Summarize job photos and notes into professional close-out reports. GPT-5.6 accepts images at their original dimensions, which helps with legibility on equipment-label photos.
5. Pilot ChatGPT Work or Ultra mode for office operations — weekly KPI rollups, invoice chasing, meeting prep. If you're comparing AI coworker products, test it against Claude Cowork on the same task and keep whichever your office manager actually likes.

What to watch out for

• Rollout is gradual. GPT-5.6 Sol is rolling out to eligible paid ChatGPT plans; free-tier users don't get it. Availability can vary while OpenAI scales capacity.
• Verify before you publish or quote. Smarter models are still confidently wrong sometimes, especially on local code requirements, rebate amounts, and pricing. Keep a human sign-off step for anything customer-facing.
• Don't overbuy. For most trades back-office work, Terra-tier quality is plenty. Reserve Sol and Ultra for the genuinely hard jobs.

The bottom line

GPT-5.6 is not a reason to rebuild your business overnight. It is a reason to expect more from the AI tools you already use, to revisit tasks AI failed at a year ago, and to ask your software vendors what they're doing with it. The gap between trades companies that use this stuff weekly and those that don't is compounding — and the tools just got better and cheaper again.
